Kansas City Florists Fight Deceptive Listings |
|
Florists in Kansas City, Kan.,
are looking to Michigan for its
success in fighting deceptive listings. Nearly 20 states have enacted laws or
amendments that ban deceptive listings – when a company buys listings in the
phone book posing as a local florist – since this issue surfaced a decade ago.
Despite legislation, enforcement remains the biggest issue. |

Floral Groups Unite for Marketing Initiative |
|
Florists have long known the positive affects of flowers,
but now, with university and consumer research to back it up, it’s time to let
the world know, according to Charles F. Kremp 3rd, AAF, of Kremp Florist in
Philadelphia. He, along with other floral industry members and a host of
national floral companies, planned to do just that when they recently met in Washington,
D.C., to form the Floral Marketing Funding Initiative Coalition, a coalition
with the goal of exploring opportunities to fund an all-industry marketing
initiative that would “take floral promotion to a new level,” according to a
press release. |

Bachman’s ‘Winks’ at Rebranding |
|
The nation’s largest independent retail florist is getting a
makeover, including a “fresh spring green” and a new gift boutique to each
garden center. Bachman’s Floral, Home and Garden Centers in Minneapolis polled
30- to 45-year-old women and learned they often thought of the store as their
“mother’s store” (things like packaging had not changed since they were little
girls shopping with their moms). |

Investment Group Acquires KaBloom |
|
An investment group based in Anaheim,
Calif. recently purchased KaBloom
Franchising Corp., according to Larry Flaherty, KaBloom’s director of
franchising. Caliber Capital Management and KaBloom finalized the sale March
30, creating two entities, KaBloom Flowers LLC and KaBloom Flower Franchise LLC,
says James Walker, president of the investment group and now president of
KaBloom. Walker says the franchise
owners will retain their storefronts. KaBloom headquarters will move from St.
Louis to Anaheim, Calif.

Floriculture Crops’ Wholesale Value Up |
|
The wholesale value of floriculture crops last year inched
ahead 1 percent from 2004, according to the The U.S. Department of
Agriculture’s (USDA) 2005 Floriculture Crops Summary. The total crop value at
wholesale from growers with $10,000 or more in sales was about $5.36 billion
for 2005, compared to $5.28 billion for 2004.The number of U.S.
growers with sales of $100,000 or more was down 4 percent to 4,412 for 2005.
The 2004 count was 4,612. |

Florists: Mixed APW Sales |
|
While sales were generally up for most florists responding
to SAF’s online Administrative
Professionals Week (APW) survey, a large percentage also say sales were flat or
down. According to preliminary results
(299 respondents), 43 percent report sales for the holiday, also known as
Professional Secretaries Week, increased from last year. Thirty-five percent
say sales decreased and 21 percent say sales remained about the same. |
