Floriculture Research Funding
The United States floriculture industry is a $30 billion year industry providing consumers with a wide variety of floral products. More than 300,000 people are employed in the floral industry, and the combined floriculture and environmental horticulture industries make up more than 10 percent of the farm gate value of crop agriculture in the United States. Floriculture has been a model industry for agricultural innovation and technologies for improving efficiency and marketability. Flowers and plants truly enhance the quality of daily life for the American public.
Yet research funding for floriculture is woefully inadequate. In fact, only a very small proportion of the total USDA research funding budget is dedicated to floriculture and environmental horticulture.
SAF asserts that the floral industry should have the same opportunities for research dollars that other parts of agriculture have. Floriculture’s importance to U.S. agriculture and the wide-ranging benefits floral products provide to the American public underscore SAF’s support for federal research funding.
